Green Bay Packers GM Ted
Thompson says the team was not
actively shopping backup
quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Profootballtalk.com reported the
Oakland Raiders asked for a
first-round pick for Randy Moss, and
the Packers countered with offering
Rodgers. Rodgers, reached
Thursday, said he had not been told
he was on the trading block.

Favre returns: Packers Reassure Rodgers

"(Rodgers) is doing good, he's doing very well,"
Thompson said at a news conference Friday afternoon.
"In fact, we just checked on him (Friday). Mike talked to
him (Friday), because, obviously, this affects him and his
immediate future. We just wanted him to know that he's a
Packer, and we're happy to have both those guys."

Rodgers' Recovery

Backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers was in the locker room after
the game for the first time since the Nov. 24 surgery on his
broken left foot.

Rodgers said the surgery to implant a screw in his fifth
metatarsal was successful. He expects to be on
crutches for at least another month.

"I can't put any weight on it for at least four to six weeks,"
Rodgers said, "so it's going to be a while."

Rodgers sustained the injury in the second half of the Nov. 19
game against New England.

"He had his ankle re-taped on the sidelines after a
series,
but essentially played the entire fourth
quarter on a broken foot."
.....
"I hope that it shows my teammates how much
I care about them, and how I'll put the team in
front of my personal health," Rodgers said. "I
just hope it shows them what kind of guy
they're getting in the future, a guy who will be
able to play through pain and continue to try
and lead the team."

...Rodgers is giving the Packers glimpses of a promising
future...

"Aaron has tremendous upside," McCarthy says. "I can't
say enough positive things about what he's done.

USA TODAY - "NFC division preview..."      Posted 9/8/2006 1:57 AM ET

Rodgers did everything to take full advantage before Favre
announced his decision to return for what might well be his
farewell season.

"This year, Aaron came in with that confidence," receiver Donald
Driver says.
"He knew what he had to do in case Brett did retire.
He had to step up and be a leader."

Says receiver Robert Ferguson: "Someday it's going to be
Aaron's team. Aaron looks really good and comfortable."

That comfort level stems from months spent absorbing
McCarthy's offensive installation and taking the first-team
practice repetitions in Favre's absence.

The 6-2, 223-pound quarterback
is throwing more accurately,
making smoother progressions and asserting himself as a leader
.

"This past spring gave me an opportunity to really lead these guys
and allow them to get to know me and my style of leadership
because Brett and I are different,"
Rodgers says. "That was a great
opportunity for me because at some point, the transition is going
to happen."

Question and Answer with Packers coach Mike McCarthy
By Bob McGinn   Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Posted on Fri, Sep. 08, 2006

                        *************************

Q. Aaron Rodgers played very well in San Diego, .... What are the
chances that one day he'll be a solid starter? What are the areas he
must improve in?

A. You never really know about quarterbacks until they've got to go do
it every week. I've seen Matt Hasselbeck have very promising training
camps and then Jake Delhomme. I've also seen guys that never really
got going in pre-season.
I think Aaron has done a really good job.
He's really young. He just doesn't get the reps to develop
playing behind a guy who plays every down. I'll be surprised,
and the first one to admit I was wrong, if Aaron Rodgers is not a
solid starting quarterback in this league.
